RiVR Investigate offers unprecedented realistic investigation training in Virtual Reality (VR). The photorealistic scenarios in RiVR Investigate offer a near-to-life immersive presence in fire and crime scenes. Unprecedented realism – To ensure training fidelity, RiVR scenes are based on real fires (controlled burns). In preparation for every VR scenario a realistic setup of for example a room, kitchen or office is built. Fire is then realistically set to the scene through arson, short-circuiting electrical appliances or for example a fallen candle. The post-burn scene is then recorded using laser-scans and thousands of photographs. Using advanced 3D modeling techniques like photogrammetry, the scene is turned into an interactive learning environment.

Through-Wall Sensing for First Responders
Any first responder knows that situational awareness is key. In domestic violence disputes, hostage rescue or human trafficking situations, first responders often need help determining where humans are behind closed doors.
This led to the development of Lumineye, a 3D-printed radar device that uses signal analysis software to differentiate moving and breathing humans from other objects, through walls. Lumineye uses pulse radar technology that works like echolocation (how bats and dolphins communicate). It sends signals and listens for how long it takes for a pulse to bounce back. The software analyzes these pulses to determine the approximate size, range and movement characteristics of a signal. On the software side, Lumineye’s app will tell a user how far away a person is when they’re moving and breathing. It’s one dimensional, so it doesn’t tell the user whether the subject is to the right or left. But the device can detect humans out to 50 feet in open air; that range decreases depending upon the materials placed in between, like drywall, brick or concrete.
Machines that currently exist to make these kind of detections are heavy and cumbersome. Lumineye was built to be portable for emergency response situations that can sometimes last for up to 12 hours or overnight. The prototype combines the detection hardware with an ordinary smartphone. It’s about 10 x 5 inches and weighs 1.5 pounds.
I solve problems.
My passion for finding creative solutions to difficult problems is what motivates me to start projects, and my constant optimism is what drives me to finish them. On several occasions I challenged myself to solve a colleague’s problem. This led to several processes being automated via BASH scripts including my job of mapping Titan. I found my love for programming after discovering that a few hundred lines of code could save me countless hours of synthesizing the maps manually. This pushed me to take several computer science classes at the university where I was able to build the foundation of my software engineering knowledge. After that I was able to focus on researching Titan’s atmosphere. This involved data analysis of Titan’s seasonal haze shift where I was able to apply my new programming skills from the classroom. I then presented these findings at an international planetary science conference where I gained greater insight into the value of my research.
Not long afterwards, I graduated from college, and decided to take on a software engineering internship at SEL. As a side project, during my internship, I researched using recurrent neural networks with our relay data to detect potential blackouts. My internship was a great experience that taught me how to work in a professional environment with strict testing and reliability standards due to our software being used in critical public infrastructure.
Around the same time that I started my internship, my parent’s company went viral. One by one I saw each of my family members quit their high-paying careers to focus in on the business. By the end of that year I decided that I should do the same, and make sure that all of their IT could handle the growth.
After I made sure everything they needed was in place, I decided to pursue a computer science master’s degree & H4D. More recently, I’ve co-founded Lumineye to help first-responders & soldiers identify people & threats through walls.

We recently had a search and rescue of a woman who was lost and had walked about a mile away from her car. We had 7-8 personnel with their personal vehicles so they did not have mobile radios in them. La Tuna Canyon Fire & Rescue was looking for a way to expand communications through our area. Just a week prior to our flooding and a mudslide, we got all the vehicle communications established, but in advanced testing found that we would have needed to put a repeater on one of our local hills to reach the upper half of our canyon. Currently, the only way this was able to be done is through a relay or cross band repeater in a couple of our vehicles. / We set up Tango Tango a week before the floods. Tango Tango has been a great benefit to us in being able to link and monitor other county radio traffic due to difference in radio systems.
